Energy Efficient Housing Program

News and Announcements

 Green Building Association Award

Office for Planning and Architecture, contracted to design the Union County Housing Authority’s energy efficient duplex, accepted an award from the Green Building Association of Central PA at the organization’s annual awards ceremony in April.  The Award for Overall Excellence for projects under $5 million was presented to the Office for Planning and Architecture for its design of the two-family, two-story home at 1308 and 1310 Market Street in Lewisburg.

The Green Building Association of Central PA is a membership organization formed in 1997 to promote environmentally responsible design, planning, construction and operation of the built environment through education, outreach and networking.  Their members include architects, planners, contractors, government officials, designers, educators, consultants and others interested in green construction practices.

Congratulations!

The 2011 Green Building Award for Excellence with projects under $5 million was presented to the Office for Planning and Architecture in April 2011.

Accepting the annual Green Building Alliance award recognition on behalf of OPA and the energy efficient duplex project team was Bruce Quigley, Todd Alwine, and Bret Peters. Also representing the project team at the awards ceremony was JD Stauffer, president of Vision Home Builders in Bloomsburg, the builder and general contractor for the energy efficient duplex.  Other members of the project team include energy rater Peter Vargo, PSU architecture professor Lisa Iulo, as well as Union County Housing Authority staff.

Union County Housing Authority Executive Director Jere Engle complimented the project team for their efforts and dedication to achieving the energy efficient goals of the project.  “This award recognizes how well the energy efficient duplex exemplifies the efficiency and sustainability standards that GBACP promotes.  We met the project goal of creating a very affordable home within a tight budget on an in-fill lot. These two homes incorporate the most energy-saving technologies to save money for its residents long-term.  Careful planning, great design, and quality construction combined to make this an award winning home.”

The energy efficient duplex is Energy Star certified and has been rated at 46 on Energy Star’s Home Energy Rating System (HERS).  This rating means each unit uses 54% less energy than a similarly sized home built to minimum code requirements. The goal of the UCHA's Energy Efficient Housing Program (EEHP) is to produce affordable housing products that are highly energy efficient using current technology, documenting the process and including a collaborative approach to educational outreach.

The energy efficient duplex project began in 2009 with the vision of UCHA Executive Director Jere Engle.  Mr. Engle recognized the opportunity to re-use an existing vacant lot for the development of affordable housing that drastically reduced the costs of energy for the homeowners.  A grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development helped the project get off the ground.

In  May the project team held a debriefing meeting. They discussed the lessons learned during the project and documented the results and recommendations.

 Market Street Duplex Open Houses

Union County Housing Authority invites the public to visit and tour its newly completed energy efficient duplex at 1308-1310 Market Street in Lewisburg.

Visitors will see many innovative features and systems that will provide energy savings of 40% to 70% over a similar conventional building.  The duplex is certified "green" due to the use of myriad sustainable and energy efficient materials and construction methods.

The energy efficient duplex will be open for tours on Friday, October 1st from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Wednesday, October 6th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 Ribbon Cutting at Duplex

On Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 the Union County Housing Authority proudly cut a symbolically green ribbon to official open the energy efficient duplex on Market Street in Lewisburg.  Executive Director, Mr. Jere Engle, thanked a host of individuals and organizations that have helped the project.  People representing all levels of local, state, and federal agencies attended and gave their congratulatons to the UCHA for its vision and goal to provide affordable "green" housing in Union County.  Also on hand for the ceremony were members of the project team, contractors, neighbors, and the media.
